Month08 Thoughts:

This Month following artifacts illustrate my learning:

Facilitating and organizing ‘The Use of Web Tools in Networked Learning’ on P2PU:  In education the tools we use for learning are many times limited to outdated textbooks, static courses and classrooms available at set times in a specific location.  Our knowledge is merely seen as something we store and evaluate on merits or application in tests.  This course will give you the ability to envision a new future based on the use of Web Tools in a Networked Learning scenario.  You will engage with instructional tools for creating, delivering and managing your learning resources in an innovative way.  The final task will be to create a Screencast Tutorial that demonstrate your skills as a Networked Teacher.  The experience from this course will turn into a multi-levelled badges program awarded from peer to peer evaluation

Staring up next ‘School of Ed’ study group ‘ePortfolios for Teachers’ on P2PU:  Looking at online portfolios for teachers – A group to explore th e use and development of online portfolios as a personal learning tool for teachers. The purpose of this group is to explore the use and development of online portfolios as a personal learning tool for teachers.  Together as a group, we hope to:

  • Discuss the uses of eportfolios as a professional development tool for teachers
  • Look at different tools for assembling an eportfolio
  • To begin thinking about and/or building your own eportfolio (optional)

Starting up ‘Syndicated Education in Distribured Learning Environments’ on P2PU:  Become an Advanced Networked Teacher [#ANT12] – In education schools create coherence based on ‘Conceptual Orientation’ (i.e. sense making) illustrating how theories and knowledge are related.  Following the emerging trend of Distributed Learning Environments used in Networked Learning, teachers also need to include ‘Spatial Orientation’ (i.e. way finding) to answer questions like: Where do I find useful Learning Resources (i.e. salience)?  How are these resources interconnected (i.e. pattern recognition)?  What is the underlying message (i.e. trajectory)?

Challenge Creators Badge Awarded to me in ‘How to Make a Challenge’:  Understand the learning theory behind a P2PU Challenge and make your first one…with a little help from your peers!  If you are looking to connect with others interested in teaching similar topics, get feedback on your design and understand the learning theory behind Challenges, then go ahead and start your first task! Requirements:  More than 3 peers – by an average rating higher than 3 – have said that the Challenge you created was fun, the titles were clear and simple and the learning goals easy to understand.

Interviewed in the MOOC blog calander One Change a Day :  “A Blog Project Reflecting Educational Change Around the World. As thousands of people are choosing to learn through massive open online courses in and around the web, this blog will tell a story of how new ways of connecting with each other online are irreversibly changing education.”

Co-facilitator for week 2 in ‘Empower your own personal learning as an educator’ at P2PU:  Taking control of your personal learning is an important 21st century skill – for students and for educators. In this group, we’ll explore new ways to empower your own professional learning and how to get started.  (This will be followed up by more advanced courses, the topics of which will be developed by this group.)

This is a slide show about the mission statement for “eduToolkit – Promoting Teachers Open Online Learning for Professional development” and you can find our next project on P2PU.

E-Learning Generations (#CCK12)

The realm of online education have endorsed ‘Open Educational Resources’ (OER) and there is progress in ‘Open Learning’. Stephen Downes write:

When you learn as a network, you cannot teach one fact after another […] It is the process of pattern recognition that we want to develop, and not the remembering of facts […] These principles are, briefly, autonomy, diversity, openness and interactivity […] Flow is what happens when your content and your data becomes unmanageable. Flow is what happens when all you can do is watch it as it goes by – it is too massive to store, it is too detailed to comprehend. Flow is when we cease to think of things like contents and communications and even people and environments as things and start thinking of them as (for lack of a better word) media – like the water in a river, like the electricity in our pipes, like the air in the sky.

Csikszentmilhalyi’s theory of flow, offers further insights into students’ experiences of learning by tapping into the balance between the challenge inherent in the work they are asked to do in classrooms and their skills to do that work (CEA)

The third’Generation of E-learning is ‘Open Assessment‘ and Mozilla’s Open Badges project will let you gather badges from any site on the Internet, combining them into a story about what you know and what you’ve achieved.

When the first software developer gets a job from Google, with a badge from Mozilla, the flood doors are going to open. (Philipp Schmidt)

This is very exciting for 21st century skills and I can’t keep my fingers off this Badge Revolution’.  In the beginning of this year I facliltated the P2PU course “EduToolkit – Teachers Open Online Learning” and we are now ready to hand out the community badges:

Month05 Insights:

  • Social Networks, Learning Communities and Web Science (Richard DeMillo, Ashwim Ram, Preetha Ram, and Hua Ali)
  • Educational Technology that Matters to Practitioners: The Promise of Educational Design Research (Tom Reeves)

Month05 Thoughts:

This is from the ‘Mission Statement’ of the NGO eduToolkit:

  • Our aim is to provide a free teacher training, where the desire to learn is fully met by the opportunity to do so.
  • Our idea of ‘Teachers Open Online Learning’ (TOOL) embrace the idea that a Community of Practitioners meet to share experiences and insights via advanced technologies.  This creates new ways to share and remix resources, collaborate with other educators, and help our learners connect with each other.

This Month following artifacts illustrate my learning:

P2PU Course called eduToolkit:  Our first online course “Teachers Open Online Learning for Professional Development” [ #TOOL12] investigated what new skills and capacities teachers need to develop in ‘Networked Literacy & Fluency’.  We then shared some thoughts on some criteria for badges/certification as a ‘Networked Teacher’.  This was a peer to peer course at P2PU and resulted in our community badges as well as our mission statement.

EduToolkit Hub on WikiEducator:  eduToolkit is a Grassroots Organization promoting Teachers Open Online Learning (TOOL) for Professional Development. We investigate the concept of The Networked Teacher and find out more about Networked Literacy & Fluency in education. The realm of online education has endorsed Open Educational Resources (OER) and there are progress in Open Learning. The third Generation of E-learning is the development of Open Assessment that recognize that accreditation and certification occurs outside formal education. Our current focus is on using Open Badges as the currency to capture and demonstrate learning, skills and reputation within the community.

In the second online course “The Use of Web Tools in Networked Learning” [#CNT12] (16/4-4/5, 2012) we will show examples from WikiEducator using the eLearning XHTML editor (eXe).  The aim is to support the participants to complete the challenge “Certified Networked Teacher” [CNT] and receive a skill badge that can be use within the open badges framework.

  • [How] can [using] the web [intelligently] make us smarter? (Howard Rheingold)
  • The 21st Century University (Valerie Irvine, Jillianne Code and Dave Snowden)

Month04 Thoughts:

These fragmented quotes and comments will soon find coherence:

Failure is better than success in learning, it’s easier to remember

There’s too much focus on specialization and a loss of generalists needed for synthesizing diverse knowledge bases in a complex world with high levels of uncertainty.

The problem with the education system is that we’re training recipe book users when we need chefs.

When asked what to do about this practically when the current education system inherently requires pre-defined outcomes thereby eliminating originality, he said:

“deception is the heart of innovation in any system.”

The human brain is a pattern processing intelligence… it has evolved from messy coherence not structured order.

Starvation, pressure, and .perspective shift produce innovation which then produces creativity

If it’s a complex problem, then bring in multiply diverse teams with ritual dissent to produce multiply parallel safe-to-fail experiments.  Managers fail if half of the experiments aren’t failing.

“cynical stories around the water coolers produce the most learning in organizations”
