I joined the study group on the topic “Online Learning Collaborations”, which is part of the eduMOOC focused on “Online Learning Today…and Tomorrow” coordinated by Ray Schroeder from The Center for Online Learning, Research and Service at the University of Illinois Springfield.

Topic: Collaboration with Online Tools

Collaborations are facilitated by a variety of on-line tools. The term ‘Social Tools’ can be defined as:

An application that can be accessed via the web or other Internet technology, that can have more than one user present in the same environment (preferably at the same time, but not limited to that). Where the users can create and exchange artefacts with each other and ideally collaborate in the creation and exchanging of theses artefacts (Stephen Downes in the Webinar “Facilitating Social Interactions”)

Week 1: Online Learning Today

Participatation in eduMOOC can be totally asynchronous, or you can join in weekly panel discussions with experts in various aspects of the topic of “Online Learning Today, and Tomorrow”.  The first week is an orientation to where online learning fits into higher education today.

Week 2: What Research Tells Us

Participatation in eduMOOC can be totally asynchronous, or you can join in weekly panel discussions with experts in various aspects of the topic of “Online Learning Today, and Tomorrow”.  The first week is an orientation to where online learning fits into higher education today. 

This week will be addressing three general questions:
  1. What are the most important findings to date coming out of online learning research?  (What do we know?)
  2. What methodologies have been most commonly used in online learning research and what promising methodologies are emerging? (How do we know it?)
  3. What are the most pressing questions that still remain unanswered?  Where is online learning research headed in the near term? (What do we still need to know?)

Week 3: Online Technologies Today and Tomorrow

During this week, we will focus on the various online technologies are being used in Online Learning, the current best practices for each, and challenges and issues that should be considered in adopting any of these technologies.  We will also review issues of accessibility with these technologies.

Week 4: Online Learning Apps and Mobile Learning

Have the technologies once again changed the way we teach and learn? Is the Learning Management System dead – replaced by apps and mobile access? This week we’ll examine the new and emerging technologies in online learning; how they are changing the way we teach and learn; and where they are leading us.

Week 5: Public, Private & Open – Online Learning

Is higher education “worth it.” Online public, private, profit and open learning initiatives are all impacted by the public perception that higher education is over-priced and less relevant than it should be to today’s job markets. What role does online learning play in this continuum of opportunities to learn? Can online learning save higher education from bursting the bubble?

Week 6: Personal Online Learning Networks

Learning is lifelong. Online learning facilitates lifelong learning in ways not possible even three years ago. With two billion people online; a host of open resources; and a rapidly growing online specialized and continuing education segment, the sky is the limit.

Week 7: Collaboratives, Collectives and Clouds

Online learning is disruptive – in the “Clayton Christensen” sense. It changes the field for all, just as the personal computer changed the world of mainframe and mini-computers of the 1970s.

Week 8: Online Learning Tomorrow 2011-2021

It has been a most interesting journey from the earliest days of online learning to today. As we have discussed in earlier weeks, we are now poised at a moment of significant change – changes in technology, economics, societal needs, etc. are converging today. How will these changes play out in the near future? How will they play out in a decade. Ubiquity, diversity, and virtuality all are characteristics that may be applied to online learning in the coming decade.
